This GPS is a very helpful and effective way of getting accurate directions for both long trips as well as short hops in a local area. Customer support is excellent and the webupdater from Garmin gives even more options than those included on the device (like different voice choices, not simply corrections of glitches). There have been very few errors in some of the directions, generally only saying the location was on the opposite side of the road than what it really was. The display is easy to read and I like the speed limit posting near the speed you are driving at--a quick glimpse gives all you need to know. Some of the tools are fantastic, such as a calculator and even a world map showing day/night so you have a nice pictoral representation of the time it is anywhere in the world. I am constantly finding new features on the GPS. I think the only thing the 255w doesn't have is an alarm clock!! A fantastic product and a superb value.

...but I think I could have gone with a more advanced product. Its basic except for the voice...I didn't want to have to look at the screen. Sometimes the street I am driving on doesn't show on the screen and the timing of the voice instructions is a little early so you best look at the screen before you turn lest you turn into an alley before your street; the visual is spot on though. The screen resolution is very good and I can see the maps without my readers. I wish it learned my usual routes. I believe it would be a great first time device for lower tech folks. There is a way through the website to program the voice to be your own voice or select from a couple of goofy ones to keep the kids entertained. Oh and I just used my mini usb that came with my camera to hook it to my computer...it worked like a charm.

I am not particularly tech driven so I was looking for an inexpensive GPS that was easy to install, easy to use and reliable, and without a lot of extras that, for me, would have been unnecessary. This Garmin fits the bill nicely. As it was factory refurbished I got it for a really low cost (I am a fan of buying refurbished from trusted vendors). Install was easy, just follow a few prompts and you're ready to go. Navigation is accurate and you can choose between a male or female voice with several accent options, such as Australian, British or American. I'm not a fan of the on/off switch and I wish it had another mount option aside from a suction cup on the dash or windshield but other than that it's a good, fairly basic GPS that I hope to get a couple of years use out of before I get another one.

We borrowed a Garmin GPS for a trip to Boston a year ago. We had never been to the city, and we had heard it was a notoriously difficult place to drive. The Garmin was invaluable on this trip, so when we decided to return to the Boston area again this year, I knew it was time to purchase a GPS for ourselves. Garmin was the highest rated product for our price range. I was so glad we got it; we used it every single day, not only for directions but to find hotels and restaurants. Now that we are home, we still use Garmin to find specific addresses and to explore areas with which we are less familiar. It has saved us a ton of time and frustration.

A great improvement over my old GPS. Locks onto satellites really quick. I like being able to choose the voices too. British female sounds classy. Only complaint is having to back out of the main screen to adjust volume.

Any GPS is really helpful but to be able to select side-by-side comparisons with the way they highlight the specific differences with shaded lines is tricky. I just focused on the top 4 features that I wanted and came to this one. This is a nice model, and I dont recommend against it. The price is a bit high and I dont only get a signal too quickly but the graphics and software are decent.

I bought this Garmin nüvi 255W for a recent trip to Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria. I punched in all my hotels, dining places, ferry terminals, etc. What a great piece of equipment this device is. I drove through downtown Seattle to downtown Vancouver like a professional, and I've never been to these places before. No more having to look at maps. We arrived in Vancouver at 7 p.m., making street addresses and signs difficult to read, but it didn't matter, as our Garmin had everything lit up on the screen and gave us turn by turn directions. I'm usually pretty good at reading maps and not getting lost. I've driven through Washington D.C., Prague, Czech Republic and Vienna, Austria in the past, and I've been fine, but this device takes everything to the next level. We were always early to everyplace we wanted to go, plus the Garmin will give your approximate arrival time. I now use my Garmin for everywhere I go, even to work, as different modes such fastest time, shortest distance or fuel savings will send you in different directions. The voice I use for my Garmin device is the Australian "Karen." I tell my wife, Karen never yells at me for making wrong turns, deciding to eat at awkward times, or just cruising around in a town I've never been to before, as Karen will always get me back on track when I'm ready. If you've never owned a GPS before, then get this one, it's all you'll ever need.
